By Better Little Home · Updated October 14, 2026 · How We Choose
Keep everyday items within reach and leave counter space for prep. In a small kitchen, a few well-chosen storage changes can help more than putting an organizer on every surface.
Look at where clutter builds up and which tools you reach for most. Start with one or two ideas below so you can tackle a problem without changing the whole room at once.
Choose your next step
Need a layout change or ready to compare an organizer? Go straight to the part that helps you.
Already know the problem? Under the sink · Tall cabinet shelf · Mixed drawer
1. Store everyday items where you use them
Keep coffee supplies near the coffee maker, cooking oils near the prep area, and dishes close to the dishwasher or drying rack. With less walking back and forth, the kitchen is easier to use and things are less likely to stay on the counter.
2. Use shelf risers inside cabinets
A shelf riser splits a tall cabinet shelf into two levels for plates, bowls, mugs, or short pantry jars. Measure the cabinet width and height before choosing one, and check that the door can close and the extra level uses the available height.
3. Add hooks beneath a shelf
Use small hooks for measuring spoons, lightweight mugs, or utensils you reach for often. Screw-in hooks suit a permanent installation; removable adhesive hooks are an option for a rental. Avoid hanging heavy items above a food-prep area.
4. Give the sink cabinet a real layout
Separate everyday cleaning supplies from backups in two removable bins under the sink. A short tension rod can also hold spray bottles, provided it stays securely in place and clears the plumbing.
5. Use the backs of cabinet doors carefully
Shallow racks or adhesive holders can keep foil, food-storage bags, or cleaning cloths on the back of a cabinet door. Before attaching one, slowly close the door and check the clearance around shelves and handles.
6. Turn one narrow gap into vertical storage
A narrow rolling cart may fit beside the refrigerator or a base cabinet. Use it for bottles, canned goods, or cleaning refills, and resist buying extra groceries just to fill it. Check floor clearance and appliance ventilation before adding one.
7. File baking sheets instead of stacking them
Store baking sheets, cutting boards, muffin tins, and cooling racks upright so you can pull out the piece you need. Use a sturdy divider or tension rods to make slots in a lower cabinet, with the heaviest pieces where the support is strongest.
8. Move rarely used tools out of prime space
Free up the shelves you use most by moving occasional-use items elsewhere. Holiday platters, specialty appliances, and extra glassware can go on a high shelf, in a dining-room cabinet, or in a labeled storage box.
9. Keep counters limited to daily essentials
A coffee maker, kettle, or utensil crock may be all you need to keep out. Clear the counter, then put back only what you use most days. Leave at least one continuous stretch free for food preparation.
10. Use clear zones in deep drawers
Use adjustable dividers to keep utensils, wraps, towels, or food containers from sliding into a jumble in deep drawers. Group things by the task you use them for; the compartments do not need to look identical.
11. Match food containers before storing them
Recycle damaged or lidless containers, then keep the rest together in a drawer or bin. Nest containers of the same shape and stand the lids in a small divider. A small matching set usually takes up less room than a large mix of sizes.
12. Create a compact pantry zone
Set aside one cabinet or section of shelving for dry goods if you do not have a pantry. Put tall items at the back only if you can still see their labels. Keep open packages in a small bin to contain crumbs and half-used bags.
13. Use a magnetic surface selectively
A magnetic paper-towel holder, timer, or small spice rack can go on the side of the refrigerator. Keep the setup light and simple so accessories do not crowd a narrow walkway. Check that the magnets will not scratch the finish.
14. Add a small landing spot near the entrance
Give mail, keys, and reusable bags a place to land before they reach the kitchen counter. A wall hook and slim tray just outside the work zone can keep them out of the way.
15. Leave some storage space empty
Leave some room for groceries, leftovers, and changes in your routine so you do not need to reorganize everything to fit them in. Shelves and drawers should close easily, with enough space to see what you already own.
A quick small-kitchen reset
- Clear out expired food and duplicate tools.
- Clear a stretch of counter you can use for prep.
- Put everyday items close to where you use them.
- Measure before buying any organizer.
- Add only one storage solution at a time.
Before you buy an organizer
Measure the width, depth, height, and door clearance, including the space taken up by pipes or hinges. Check whether the organizer is easy to clean and solves a problem you run into regularly. It should make the kitchen easier to use without adding visual clutter.
Frequently asked questions
How can I add storage without remodeling?
Start with the cabinets and drawers you already have. Risers, dividers, hooks, and clearer zones can make more of that space usable. Moving occasional-use items elsewhere often frees up the most room without costing anything.
What should stay on a small kitchen counter?
Keep out what you use most days and leave space to prepare food. Store everything else nearby, somewhere it is easy to put back.
Are open shelves good for small kitchens?
Open shelves can keep frequently used dishes within reach, but dust and visible clutter are the trade-offs. One short shelf may work better than replacing all the upper cabinets.
